Your GOALS! Are they really YOURS?

May 06, 2021

Sometimes when we are building our businesses, we might look around us for inspiration as we set goals for its future.  While it’s totally okay (and even encouraged) to seek out sources of inspiration, it’s important to make sure that you aren’t just adopting somebody else’s goals in lieu of really homing in on what it is that you want in the long term.

When was the last time that you truly sat down and reflected on what it is that you want from your business?  Are you really crystal clear on your vision for the future?  Do you have a concrete action plan on how to get to that place?  Oftentimes, we get a loose vision of what we want and then neglect to consider those follow-up questions, but they are supremely important to answer if you want to fall in love and stay in love with your business.

The idea of creating that vision and goal setting can feel a little daunting, particularly because it’s going to require you to really recognize how capable you are.  Do you set the bar low so that you are consistently pumping yourself up or do you set it high and risk missing the mark?  Maybe there’s a way to find the in between space.  Any way you swing it, they need to be your goals, not your spouse’s or your mom’s or your followers on social media or your franchise or anybody else’s.  They also have to be realistic, to some extent, too, so that you can measure your success and progress as you work towards those goals.  So, start there, just creating that vision and setting up your unique goals.

What’s next?

Now it’s time to figure out the how.  Focus on where it is that you are wanting to grow and reverse engineer all the way from the achievement of that goal all the way back through the steps that you had to take to get there.  You may have heard this before, but I’m going to ask you to do it a little bit differently than most coaches or consultants might advise you to do.  Most of them want you to consider a 3-5 year plan, but, in my opinion, that’s far too long in today’s world.  If we learned one thing from 2020, it’s that life happens quickly, and we have to pivot to keep up.  So, instead of looking at that long-term time frame, focus on just laying out the next 3 or 6, maybe even 9 months at a time.  Identify a couple of projects that you would like to have completed within that time frame and then set up your daily, weekly and monthly action steps.

Once you’ve nailed down your vision and implemented your action steps, get to work taking them!  Do not, however, use this timeline as a way to beat yourself up.  If you miss a step, go back and take it.  Being an entrepreneur is hard and you don’t have to get it absolutely perfect.

You also don’t have to go through the process entirely alone.  There are a lot of people out there going through the same ups and downs, facing the same questions and concerns and working hard to navigate the many twists and turns of entrepreneurship, so seek those people out.  If you aren’t sure where to find them, try popping into our Facebook group, “Be a Confident Entrepreneur, Gain Confidence and Grow Your Income”.  Introduce yourself the group, tell us what you do and let us know how we can help you to grow a successful business (whether that’s seeking out a new employee, looking for an opinion on a software program or asking any other business-related questions).  Don’t forget that you also have me in your back pocket.  Click the “work with me” link on my website to schedule a 25-minute information call to see if one-on-one coaching might help you to meet your goals even faster.

Hey there, everybody, how are you? Hey, Instagram. Glad you could join us. I've got LinkedIn, I've got Facebook. Be a Confident Entrepreneur Group and our Facebook business page here. So I've got everybody here all the same time. It's so exciting. All right, you guys, I know it's Wednesday. It's not my normal day to pop in, but I'm going to see, yep, everything's looking good.

OK, cool. So happy hump day. I'm usually here on Thursdays. Normally I pop in to say Happy Friday Eve Day, but tomorrow and Friday are super busy days at our house. So this is going to have to work for today and I hope that's OK. Don't fire me. I'll be back next week on Thursday at our normal time. And I am normally, you know, this not rocking a t-shirt, but this is as good as it got. I mean, some days, some days are like that right now. And it says build a life love, which I hope you're doing. I know you are. I know you're working towards that. So if you're on Facebook, give stream yard access to your name, just say, I think it's like give them permission to see your name or something so that I can see that you're here with me live. And I'd love for you to say hi.

Today, we're going to talk about your goals, yours, not anybody else's. Are they truly yours? And you may be asking, what are the heck do you mean by that anyway, Tracy? Well, hold on and I'll explain.

But first, if you're new to me, I want to introduce myself. I'm Tracy Beaver’s, I'm a business and sales coach, and my passion is helping you. The small business owner, solopreneur, salesperson, untangle the parts of your business that are not working to gain confidence and know that everything you're doing every day is going to grow your income, because otherwise, why are we in business and why are we working so hard? Right. OK, if you're here live, I'd love for you to drop a one in the chat so that I can see that you're here with me. I would absolutely love that if you're catching the replay. I totally love that too. Type replay in the chat. Totally love my replay guys and gals. And again, if you're on stream yard, give them permission to see your name so that I can see. I can see your name.

Hey, Kamisha. Hey, Julianne, love it, thank you guys for watching. So as always, I say this every week. If there's something on your mind from this week or from the workshop we did last week, drop it in the chat or send me a DM, because chances are if you have a question or a need, then other people do, too. Hey, Mary Catherine, thanks for joining us. All right.

So I had a blast with you guys last week in the workshop. I hope you did, too. And I'm here to walk you through your goals and your aspirations for yourself, both personally and professionally. I want to help you take a moment to reflect and visualize how you want your life to go forth, both short term and long term, how you want your business to grow and serve you. Does that surprise you that I said your business should serve you kind of like we talked about last week, your schedule should serve you?

Let me ask you this. When was the last time you asked yourself, what do I want from this business? What's my vision? How am I going to get there? It may have been a long time since you asked yourself that, because a lot of times we think about it, we set the goals, we put the blinders on and we go and then we don't really reassess in the middle. But let's talk about goal setting. It can feel superheavy, am I right? I mean, I do not know about you, but it feels heavy to me. Like, what goals do you set? What are you truly capable of? What do we think we can truly achieve? And it's scary to say it out loud or write it down on a piece of paper. Do we set them low so we meet them and we feel like a total rock star, or do we set them high and risk feeling like not so much of a rock star if we don't hit them right. They’re somewhere in between.

So here's what I've learned through growing my own businesses and coaching other people on how to grow theirs. We have to do these things, set goals that are authentic to us. They're your goals. Did they come from you or did they come from your franchise, did they come from your company? Did they come from your upline or from peer pressure through social media for what you think your business should look like? Do they come from your spouse or your significant other or your best friend or your mama? Because everybody's mom thinks they can run for president? Right. But we have to take a realistic overview of our business. It's our business, our time availability, our budget and where we want to be. Then once we have that realistic viewpoint, then we can sprinkle some sunshine and unicorns and rainbows over it so that we can keep that wild eyed. Anything is possible. Mental game going,
My goal, now, this may sound super ridiculous, but I'm just going to go ahead and share it with you. I want to make so much money that my family future is secure. We don't have to be as millionaires, but I want to be secure and leave a legacy for my family and I want to bless other people. I want to say all the homeless animals, dogs, cats, you name it, find them a home.

And wouldn't it be super cool if I was like Jeff Bezos or somebody and I could just call you up and go, hey, what do you need help in your business with today? Oh, you need somebody to come work the front desk. I'll be there. I can give you some time for free. Or I could show up in your boutique and be like you need help with order fulfillment and shipping. I'm on it. I'm great with a tape gun. How much fun would that be just to be able to just volunteer? So anyway, that's a little bit about me.

OK, so number two idea, you may be asking yourself, OK, Tracy, what's next? Well, we want to look at the overall vision for the business. We talked about this last week. Where is it you're wanting to grow? Then we can reverse engineer back through it. And I want you to focus on a smaller timeframe than most coaches will ask you about. Most coaches or business consultants are going to ask you what your three to five year plan. I'm sorry, but in today's environment, that is too long, in my opinion, just my opinion.

Our days go by in a blur. Our lives change so fast. And if 2020 didn't show us that, I mean, take the and that and the latest Facebook IOS14 update for social media. I mean, does anybody feel like I know what they're doing with Facebook ads anymore? Our lives can turn on a dime. So here's my suggestion. Let's lay out the next, let's look at your overall vision, but then let's lay out the next three to six to nine months at a time.

Me, I'm looking for September. I know where I want my business to go a year from now, but my focus, my vision, my blinders are on for September. I'm going to do another five day workshop in September like the one we did last week. Super excited about it. I figure your summer will be over. People's kids will be back in school, hopefully in person. People's kids will be at college. Everybody can refocus and get planning for third quarter and fourth quarter, right?

Yeah, that would be like, yeah, almost fourth quarter. So I want you to identify a few projects that you want to achieve and set a timeline for them. Then I want you to reverse engineer back through to decide those daily tasks that you need to accomplish and put those on your planner. And there's some really great free organizational software programs out there. If you're looking for something that's better than your bulletin board with sticky notes on it or the big white dry erase board on your dining room wall, there's nothing wrong with that.

But pretty soon I'm going to run out of space. So I like to use Trello.com, Monday.com is also a really good one. In case you have a team, Google Docs, you can organize your thoughts and your ideas and all that. So now that you've got your goals lined out for the next three to nine months, I want you to look at each month. What do you need to work on each week? What do you need to work on each day? What do you need to be doing? Is it on your planner? Those daily and weekly tasks need to make it into your daily and weekly planning. These are going to help you track your progress and feel confident knowing that you are doing the things you need to do to move the needle. Are you going to be perfect every day? No, nobody's days are perfect, y'all. The wheels totally came off the bus yesterday at my house. I mean, it's going to happen.

That's when we have to take a deep breath, do the best we can, accomplish what we can. And we know that tomorrow's a new day. And also it's only the 16th of June. We still have plenty of month left, even though this month feels like it is flying by. I don't know anybody else feels that way, but it does to me. So let's getting you, let's get you setting some goals that are authentic to you and nobody else but you.

Let's have you nailed down a vision for the next three to six maximum nine months, then think through how you're going to accomplish those small steps towards that every day. Every week, do not beat yourself up if you aren't perfect. Again, nobody is. And remember what I always say. I say this to you every week, don't go it alone. Being an entrepreneur is hard. Some days everybody wants to buy what you're selling and other days nobody wants to know your name happens to me, too.

If you think you're alone, you are totally not alone, not in the least. And this group is a perfect example of that because there's a lot of you in here and you've been supporting each other, so you know that you're not alone. All right, guys, if you're just catching this on the Facebook business page or LinkedIn, I want you to hop over, or Instagram. I want you to hop over to the Facebook group called Be a Confident Entrepreneur, Gain Confidence and Grow Your Income. Jump in, grab a seat, make yourself at home, get a cold beverage. I'm just kidding. It's a Facebook group, but you got the visual. Introduce yourself. Tell us what you do. Let us know how we can help you, what you're looking for if you're hiring and you need help finding good people. If you need help with an opinion about a software program, I mean, I don't know. Throw your stuff in the group and let's work together.

And as always, I am here for you. And if you want to discuss coaching and what that looks like and what you and I could accomplish together, send me a DM, contact me through my website. Let's talk about it on my website. There's a new feature and the Work with Me section. If you want to do a 25 minute info call, you can click on work with me. It's one of the options there. I think it's the one that's all the way over on the right.

And you can sign up there for an informational call just to talk about your needs and see if coaching is even a good fit for you. So I want you guys to have a great rest of the week, have a happy Friday Eve Day tomorrow, have an excellent weekend. And remember, when one of us rises, we all rise. So let's keep cheering each other on, shall we?

All right. I'm going to look really quick at stream yard. Oh, awesome. Hey, Josh, hey, Lilian, awesome. So good to see you guys. And somebody on LinkedIn said they're in the middle of running their business that wanted to stop by and say hello. That's so great. But it says it says LinkedIn user. I'm sorry, I don't know who you are. Somebody said Happy Hump Day. Awesome. All right, guys, thank you so much. Thanks for being amazing. I will see you next week.

And let me know what kind of content you want. What do you want me to talk about? What do you need? I'm here for you. All right. Talk to you guys soon.
