Why Most Entrepreneurs Struggle to Grow Their Email List

Meet Tierney Gunthorpe

Tierney is a physiotherapist turned sleep apnea coach who helps people struggling with sleep-disordered breathing and CPAP challenges.

Her journey started after having children and trying to understand why she still felt exhausted despite doing “all the right things.”

That experience eventually led her into the world of sleep apnea education and coaching.

And honestly?
The statistics she shared were eye-opening.

So many people:
• Are undiagnosed
• Are dismissed
• Are handed a CPAP machine with very little support afterward

Entrepreneurship Feels Overwhelming Sometimes Because… It Is

Very early in the conversation, Tierney shared something many entrepreneurs relate to:

Running a business can feel isolating and overwhelming.

Especially when:
• You are doing everything yourself
• You have young children
• You are wearing all the hats
• If you do not do the work… it simply does not get done

I think this is one reason community and coaching support matter so much.

Sometimes you simply need help simplifying the next step.

The Real Problem Was NOT the Lead Magnet

Tierney already had several lead magnets:
• A sleep apnea risk quiz
• Free sleep-related resources
• Workshops and masterclasses

But once we started digging deeper…

We discovered something important:

She was not consistently promoting them.

And this matters:

A good lead magnet cannot grow your email list if nobody sees it.

You Are Allowed To Promote Your Lead Magnet More Than Once

I think this is where many entrepreneurs get stuck.

They promote a lead magnet:
• Once
• Maybe twice

Then quietly retire it because they assume:
“Everyone already saw it.”

Spoiler alert:
Most people never saw it. 😂

In this coaching session, we discussed how important it is to consistently rotate and re-promote your lead magnets every week.

Even during launches.
Even while promoting paid offers.

Because list growth should continue year-round.

One of the Smartest Ways To Reuse a Lead Magnet

One of my favorite practical strategies we discussed:

Using AI to generate multiple promotional angles for the SAME lead magnet.

Instead of constantly creating new freebies…

You can create:
• Different captions
• Different hooks
• Different graphics
• Different positioning angles

For the exact same lead magnet.

So now one freebie suddenly becomes:
• 4 promotions
• 8 promotions
• 12 promotions

Without creating anything new.

That is sustainable visibility.

Your Lead Magnet Needs a Next Step

This was another important coaching moment.

I asked Tierney:
“Where does your lead magnet lead people next?”

Because lead magnets should not exist in isolation.

There should always be:
• A next conversation
• A next offer
• A next step
• A next invitation

For Tierney, her quiz naturally led into consultation calls where she could discuss results and uncover deeper needs.

That alignment matters.

Why Tracking KPIs Creates Better Visibility

Another big coaching conversation centered around KPIs.

And listen…
I know many entrepreneurs avoid numbers because they feel intimidating.

But tracking creates clarity.

We discussed monitoring:
• Lead magnet conversion rates
• Open rates
• Click-through rates
• List growth trends
• Promotion consistency

Because without tracking…

You are guessing.

And guessing makes business growth much harder.

Visibility Often Solves the “Conversion Problem”

This is something I teach constantly:

Sometimes entrepreneurs think they have:
• A conversion problem
• An offer problem
• A pricing problem

When the REAL issue is simply:

Not enough people know the offer exists.

This coaching session reinforced that beautifully.

Tierney already had valuable resources and offers built.

The missing piece?

More visibility.

Borrowing Other People’s Audiences Still Works

One of the strategies we explored was using collaborations to grow her list faster.

Ideas included:
• Podcast guest appearances
• Facebook Lives with aligned professionals
• Joint workshops
• Referral partnerships
• Email list swaps

And honestly?

These strategies are incredibly underrated right now.

Especially in health, wellness, and coaching spaces where trust matters deeply.

Email List Swaps Are a Hidden Growth Strategy

This was a newer strategy for Tierney, and I loved seeing her excitement around it.

If you are unfamiliar with list swaps:

You partner with someone who serves a similar audience.

Then:
• You share their freebie with your audience
• They share yours with theirs

Simple.
Relationship-driven.
And incredibly effective when the audiences align.

Your Social Media Profiles Should Support List Growth

Another important reminder from this episode:

Your social profiles should actively support email list growth.

We discussed:
• Updating cover photos
• Rotating calls-to-action
• Pinning lead magnet posts
• Updating Instagram bio messaging
• Making offers more visible

And yes…
Changing your Facebook cover photo really DOES trigger notifications and increase visibility. 😂

Open Rates Are NOT the Full Story

Tierney shared that her email open rate was over 50%, which is excellent.

But we also discussed why:
• Open rates are less reliable than they used to be
• Click-through rates matter more
• Engagement matters more than vanity metrics

Because ultimately?

We are not building email lists for bragging rights.

We are building relationships.

Conversations Create Clients

One of my favorite parts of this coaching session was the discussion around email replies and DMs.

Because this is where many conversions actually happen.

We brainstormed:
• Better email prompts
• Story-based engagement
• Fun questions
• DM follow-ups
• Conversation starters

Because whether it happens:
• In the inbox
• In email
• In DMs

…the goal is the same:

Real conversations.

That is where trust deepens.
That is where needs are uncovered.
And that is often where clients are created.
